In 1951 Isamu Noguchi began to design the Akari Light Sculptures, a group of works handcrafted out of washi paper that eventually comprised over 100 luminaires – table, floor and ceiling lamps. He chose the name 'akari' for these objects, a word that means 'light' in Japanese, connoting both illumination and physical lightness.

Each luminaire is meticulously crafted by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a traditional

family-run company based in Gifu, Japan. In a first step, bamboo rods are stretched across the original wooden forms designed by Noguchi to make the framework that determines the object's shape. Washi paper, derived from the bark of the mulberry tree, is cut in strips to fit the size and shape of the lamp and then glued to the bamboo ribbing. After the glue has dried, the wooden form is removed and the shade can be folded. The Akari Light Sculptures are packed for shipping or storage in flat boxes developed especially for the luminaires.

The Akari Light Sculptures are marked with a stylised sun-and-moon logo, which also resemble the corresponding Japanese characters. They guarantee the authenticity of each product.

Isamu Noguchi was a prominent Japanese-American artist and designer known for his ability to fuse sculpture and furniture design into a single piece. After studying sculpture in New York and Paris, Noguchi developed a unique style that blended modern minimalism with the organic and natural forms of Japan. And he began experimenting with the fusion of sculpture and furniture design, creating unique pieces that are both beautiful and functional. Throughout his career, he worked in a wide variety of media, from stone and wood to metal and paper, and his work includes sculptures, furniture, lamps, gardens and stage sets. Some of Noguchi's most famous designs include the Noguchi Table, a glass and wood coffee table found in many museum collections around the world, as well as the Akari collection, a series of paper lamps that are an expression of his interest in light and shadow. His work continues to be highly valued and is found in many museum collections around the world.
