In 1947, the American designer George Nelson was commissioned to create a collection of watches. After studying the way people used watches, Nelson concluded that the time could be read according to the relative position of the hands, which made it possible to dispense with numbers. In addition, since most used wristwatches, he assumed that wall clocks had become decorative elements of interiors.
