Starting in 1951, the Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Sculptures: more than one hundred handmade models made of washi paper as table, floor or ceiling lamps. For these objects he chose the name "akari", which means "light" and "light" in Japanese, to denote both illumination and lightness.

Each lamp is meticulously crafted by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a traditional family business based in Gifu, Japan. In a first

phase, bamboo canes are placed along the original wooden forms designed by Noguchi to build the structure that will determine the shape of the object. The washi paper, obtained from the bark of the mulberry tree, is cut into strips to fit the size and shape of the lamp and then glued to the bamboo structure. When the glue dries, the wooden mold is removed and the shade can be folded. Akari Light Sculptures are packaged for shipping or storage in flat boxes specially developed for these lamps.

Akari Light Sculptures are marked with a logo depicting the stylized sun and moon, also reminiscent of the corresponding characters of the Japanese alphabet. They guarantee the authenticity of each product.

Isamu Noguchi was a prominent Japanese-American artist and designer known for his ability to fuse sculpture and furniture design into a single piece. After studying sculpture in New York and Paris, Noguchi developed a unique style that blended modern minimalism with the organic and natural forms of Japan. And he began experimenting with the fusion of sculpture and furniture design, creating unique pieces that are both beautiful and functional. Throughout his career, he worked in a wide variety of media, from stone and wood to metal and paper, and his work includes sculptures, furniture, lamps, gardens and stage sets. Some of Noguchi's most famous designs include the Noguchi Table, a glass and wood coffee table found in many museum collections around the world, as well as the Akari collection, a series of paper lamps that are an expression of his interest in light and shadow. His work continues to be highly valued and is found in many museum collections around the world.
